Materials & print finish

A practical starting point for choosing your print specification.

Start with what the part needs to do

Tell us whether the print is for display, a fit check or a working part. Exposure to heat, outdoor use, load and contact with other components all matter. Material choice alone does not guarantee that a part is suitable for its application.

PLA

A common choice for visual prototypes, display models and checking the shape of a design. If the part will be exposed to heat or sustained load, include that in your enquiry before choosing PLA.

PETG

An option to discuss for practical parts and enclosures where toughness matters. Tell us about any clips, flexible features or mating parts so the specification can be reviewed.

ABS

An option for functional prototypes with more demanding requirements. Share the expected operating conditions so material suitability and printability can be checked.

Resin printing

We also offer resin printing for detailed models and small parts. Select Resin in the online calculator for an initial estimate: £10 setup per order, £0.45 per estimated print hour and a £10 minimum. No separate resin material charge is added. Final print orientation, supports and batching need review. Email your model, quantity, intended use and finish requirements to sales@3dtodoor.uk to discuss the options.

Layer height and surface finish

Layer lines are a normal feature of filament printing. The estimate tool offers 0.28 mm draft, 0.20 mm standard and 0.12 mm fine layers. A smaller layer height can improve the appearance of curved and sloping surfaces, but increases printing time. It is not a guarantee of dimensional accuracy.

Infill and strength

Infill is the internal structure of the part. The tool offers 15%, 20%, 40% and solid infill. More infill adds material, but strength also depends on wall thickness, geometry, material and print orientation. Describe the load the part will carry rather than relying on an infill percentage alone.

Colours, supports and tolerances

Include your preferred colour in your enquiry; availability needs confirmation. Overhangs may need support material, which can leave marks when removed. For parts that must fit together, identify the important dimensions and clearances.
